Is it possible to remove back acne scars?

Acne is formed due to blockage of pores containing oil glands on the body and face. The blockage containing skin cells, sebum, and hair then develops into a plug which will be secondarily infected with bacteria, resulting in inflammation and pimple. You are always advised neither to touch nor to squeeze the acne as it will worsen the inflammation and further enlarging it. Certain types of acne, particularly cystic acne will leave behind permanent scars in the form of pits or depressions in various sizes and depths. However, acne scar treatment by Mediviron is available to restore irregular surface on the site of acne in addition to acne removal.

Causes of back acne

As with any other acne, sweat glands producing excess sebum gets build up along with dead skin cells, clogging up the pores. In turn, when the wall of hair follicles swell up, it will turn into the white head but turns black upon air exposure due to oxidation,  the blocked pores will provide a favourable environment for bacteria to grow. As a result, an infection that occurs will cause skin inflammation, forming pimples.

Why are you more prone to acne?

  • Genetics – You are more likely to suffer from acne if you have family members facing similar skin problems.
  • Medications – Acne can form or worsen as a consequence of side effects from medications such as corticosteroids, lithium, phenytoin, isoniazid and certain antidepressants.
  • Hormones – Hormonal changes during puberty are often the triggering factor for pimple outbreaks. When individuals reached puberty, androgens capable of causing physiological changes including enlarging the sebaceous glands which in turn will make more sebum. Hormonal changes can also be due to pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives as well as during menstrual cycles.
  • Sweat- Sweat, especially if it’s trapped under tight clothing, can make acne worse. That is why you’re advised to wear loose-fitting clothing made out of cotton material to enable your skin to breathe.
  • Stress- Stress may not be the direct cause of acne, but it could be a contributing factor.
  • Diet – Studies indicate that dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, bagels and chips may worsen acne as it provides an optimum environment for bacterial growth. Chocolate has also long been suspected of making acne worse.

How to eliminate back acne?

There are many ways for you to try at home initially. However, for a more effective result, it is best to consult with a dermatologist.

  1. Topical medications

This is the first choice for mild to moderate acne. Most of the topical medications can be obtained over-the-counter easily and at an affordable price. You are advised to use products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide fights against the bacterial infection on clogged pores as well as reducing oil while salicylic acid helps with abnormal shedding of cells and unclog the pores thereby resolving lesions. Both of these medications will only work with continuous usage because once stopped, the lesions will recur.

  1. Pills

Oral medication is only prescribed if a person has a severe type of acne. Treatment may include:

  • Antibiotics to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation: sometimes, doctors will prescribe a combination of antibiotics alongside a topical medication. A person may need to take them for a few months to observe for results.
  • Birth control pills and other medicines containing hormones aid in the reduction of oil on the skin. This option might affect the menstrual cycle for young teenage girls.
  • Isotretinoin is one of the most effective medications to combat acne. It does, however, have the potential to cause harm to unborn babies in pregnant women. Due to its side effects, doctors will need to monitor users from time to time.
  1. Alternative treatments:
  • Laser and other light therapies.
  • Chemical peel
  • Drainage and extraction is a procedure to remove large acne cysts if they’re unresponsive medication. However, this will possibly leave a scar.
